Meditative Writing Workshop

The Psychology of Creativity & Storytelling

MEDITATIVE WRITING  Level ONE

“Meditative Writing truly is 'assisted self-discovery.' For the same reason writers should take acting classes, Meditative Writing helps you get down into your body, to work a scene or character from the inside out. The practice has applications even beyond writing, into directing, pitching, and just being in the world. This class and subsequent practice has been extremely helpful to me in my work.” – Christine Boylan (Showrunner, Marvel & Netflix)
Learn how to use meditation to feel connected every time you write, create never before seen characters and stories that only you could write, overcome resistance, build stronger writing habits, conquer self-doubt, and write evocative new stories, that are uniquely yours but speak to universal truths.

The techniques of Meditative Writing were developed to address each writer's specific needs. In each of the four workshop sessions, cognitive and meditative exercises are crafted specifically to help you open your mind to new ideas and inspirations, tap into a deeper well or creativity, and write without judgement. These in-class guided meditations will ensure you leave each session with pages upon pages of new writing.

At its core, Meditative Writing places character front and center. In this process, you will focus on what you see or experience, not what you think. The thinking/judging mind leads to clichéd and safe choices, while the curious/experiential mind leads to bold and creative new art. Instead, consider Meditative Writing as your film shoot (metaphorically, of course). In the meditations, you are collecting footage of your character and documenting it on paper. Later, when you feel you have enough footage, then you can begin to edit that material into structured stories without losing your unique voice.

Meditative Writing is open to all artists at any stage of their creative development. Whether you're an aspiring or established novelist, poet, screenwriter, playwright, songwriter, or journalist, everyone can benefit from creative guidance and internal exploration.

Please have at least 30 minutes, five days a week outside of class hours available to practice and explore assignments between classes.

This class is for writers/artists looking to develop their personal writing practice and scripts/manuscripts. If you are a teacher looking to develop or enhance your curriculum please click here and we will contact you about the appropriate workshops and mentorship options.
"These are professional-grade tools that short circuit the fear, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism that stands in the way of you doing your best work. I rely on them regularly!"
- Carly Wray (Writer/Producer, Mad Men, Westworld)

Workshop FEATURES

  • All classes take place live online via Zoom. On-camera participation is required.
  • Every class includes a classic 15-40-minute Meditative Writing session designed to help you generate new pages of story, characters, and explorations.
  • A week before your first class, you will receive a brief questionnaire about your writing background and goals. This will be used to tailor each class to your needs.
  • Subjects explored in class may include story structure, character psychology, how to handle distractions, divergent vs convergent thinking, and artistry.
  • The lessons will be a reflection of the needs of the writers in the class. They more you speak up the more personalized the class will be.
  • Sometimes video replays are available for a limited time frame but writers should prioritize being present in each class for this method to be effective.
