The Cinema Club Masterclass

The art, Craft, and Career Journey of the Filmmakers that are shaping contemporary cinema

Cinema Club Masterclass

This 6‑month Masterclass turns every movie you watch into an active, inspiring training ground for your own work.

Instead of being a passive viewer, you will learn to watch like a psychological and artistic anthropologist, studying behavior, image, and structure even when you are not writing.

Focus: 1 filmmaker per month, with 3–4 films you watch on your own before class.

Flow: Guided viewing worksheets, a live deep‑dive discussion, and writing exercises that turn what you observed into new story material or help you develop a project you are working on.

How it works

Month 1: Orientation and introductions, how to “watch like a great storyteller,” and how to use attention, emotion, and curiosity as tools while watching movies.

Months 2–6: Each month features one filmmaker; you watch their films using a worksheet that trains you to track craft elements such as character, theme, structure, and imagery, like an anthropologist of story. You will then come to class ready to discuss the films, the craft, and your experience with each film.

Who this is for: This class is designed for screenwriters, filmmakers, cinephiles, storytellers, creative nonfiction writers, novelists, and anyone who wants to dive deeper into long‑form film, watch with intention, and finally get off their goddamn phone while they do it.

What you’ll get from it: A repeatable method for watching films that quietly develops your screenwriting/directing/criticism muscles every time you press play, so your practice continues even on “off” writing days.

A deeper, more intentional relationship to cinema: you will see how filmmakers shape emotion, meaning, and tension, and you will have language and tools to bring those discoveries into your own work.

"These are professional-grade tools that short circuit the fear, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism that stands in the way of you doing your best work. I rely on them regularly!"
- Carly Wray (Writer/Producer, Mad Men, Westworld)
